If you are travelling to China, then spending some time in Beijing will probably be on your list.
Beijing is famous for its rich history, but there is also a modern side to the city that you shouldn’t miss. You can find interesting architecture, cutting-edge technology, and a vibrant arts and nightlife scene; the modern side of Beijing is just as amazing as its ancient past.
Beijing is my favourite city in China; it seamlessly blends old and new. There is so much to do here, you won’t get bored. I would recommend spending at least 3 days here, but ideally much longer if you can.
Here are the top 5 must-do activities if you want to explore Beijing’s modern side.

I offer 1-to-1 China travel planning calls where I help you plan your itinerary, transport, apps, and logistics so your trip runs smoothly.
1. Marvel at Beijing’s futuristic architecture
Beijing’s Central Business District (CBD) is the best place to get a taste of some of the futuristic buildings the city has to offer. Skyscrapers like the iconic CCTV Headquarters (nicknamed the "Big Pants") and the tallest building in the city, the China Zun (CITIC) tower, dominate the skyline. There are also some incredible buildings sporadically placed around the city.
If you are interested in modern architecture then look out for:
· CCTV Headquarters - pictured above left
· China Zun (CITIC tower) - pictured above left
· Galaxy Soho - pictured below
· Wangjing Soho
· Leeza Soho (all the Soho buildings are by Zaha Hadid)
· National Centre for Performing Arts - pictured above right
· Phoenix Centre
· The National Stadium (The Birds Nest)
· Daxing international airport
Top tip: All these buildings look amazing at night, if you are into a bit of night photography.
2. Shop till you drop at a Beijing mall
One of the trendiest areas in the city for a bit of shopping, dining and nightlife is Sanlitun’s Taikoo Li (below left). This open-air mall is filled with high-end boutiques, international brands and local designers. It is also a famous place to people-watch and for street photography. Once you have finished shopping there are loads of great Western restaurants in this area or maybe you fancy heading to a roof top bar to catch great views of the city at night.
Malls in China are more about the overall experience rather than just a place to shop. The aesthetics are often half mall, half art gallery, half visual delight for all the senses. The two I find the most interesting are the 3.3 Mall and Parkview Mall (below middle and right), they are often filled with interesting sculptures, so you can appreciate art as well as the clothes.
3. Check out the art scene at 798
Beijing’s 798 Art District is a must-visit for anyone who loves contemporary art and creative spaces. Once an abandoned factory area, this district has been transformed into a vibrant hub of galleries, street art, and trendy cafés. Whether you’re into local art exhibitions, photography, or just cool urban vibes, you’ll find something inspiring here. Some of the exhibitions are free, and some you need to pay for. It is a great place to take some photos as the street art and interesting buildings are fun to explore.
Top tip: Head here in the week to avoid the crowds, but be aware some smaller galleries may not be open every day.
4. Explore the Olympic Park area
Beijing is the first city in the world to host both the summer and winter Olympic Games. Thankfully, the Olympic Park and stadiums were used for both and remain a top place to visit on your trip to Beijing.
You can marvel at the architecture of the National Stadium (The Bird’s Nest). If it is open, then you can also do a tour inside. We were able to do a rooftop walk, but I can’t find out if this is still available. You will also find the National Aquatics Centre (or Water Cube) and the Olympic Tower. You could also spend the whole day walking around Olympic Forest Park, as it is a huge recreational area. In the winter, you will find this area turned into a winter playground for fun activities.
Top tip: Visit in the evening when the buildings are all lit up – they look amazing!
5. Take an E-Bike Tour Around the City
One of the best ways to experience modern Beijing is by hopping on an e-bike and cruising through the city. Hit some of the places I mentioned above, all from the comfort of an e-bike and local guide telling you about the sites. My friend Dom from ‘Our Beijing’ runs a modern Beijing tour where you will see cutting edge architecture and trendy neighbourhoods.
Beijing isn’t just about ancient palaces and temples; it is a city that is constantly developing. Whether you’re marvelling at its skyscrapers, exploring its creative districts, or experiencing it by e-bike, there’s always something new to discover. So leave some time on your itinerary for the modern side of Beijing - you won’t be disappointed!
