Best Apps For China Travel – Essential App Swaps
Planning a trip to China? One thing that often surprises first-time travellers is that many of the apps we rely on every day don’t work properly. Google Maps, WhatsApp, and even Uber are blocked or unreliable in China without a VPN.
But don’t worry, I’m here to help! There are Chinese alternatives that are not only more accessible but better suited.
This guide will show you the best apps to use for China travel so you can navigate, pay, and communicate like a pro - with just a few app swaps.

Swap Google Maps for Amap
Google Maps isn’t reliable in China — the streets don’t always match, locations can be off, and it isn’t up-to-date. You also can’t use it without a VPN on your phone.
Instead, download Amap (Gaode), the best Chinese map option.
Why Amap is better:
Accurate navigation for walking, driving, and public transport
You can change the interface to English (it also supports 14 different languages)
Real-time updates for traffic and transit
It has up-to-date information about places on the map so you can read reviews
You don’t need a VPN to use it
2. Forget Apple Pay, use Alipay instead
Cards aren’t widely used in China; many smaller shops and local eateries don’t have card machines to take payment, so the default payment method is to use your phone to pay. Instead of using Apple Pay, the solution is Alipay.
Why Alipay is essential:
Link your foreign credit card directly to the app - choose one with 0% transaction fees so you don’t get charged. In the UK I use a Monzo account, which is great for international travel.
Pay with QR codes almost everywhere (restaurants, taxis, shops, even street food)
Easy to set up before your trip
Alipay isn’t just a good app to use to pay for things - you can use it to get a taxi, on public transport, get a share bike and much more.
This would be the one app I would suggest you can't travel without in China!
3. People don’t use WhatsApp; everyone uses WeChat
If you want to connect with your family and friends back home, then you will need a VPN to get on WhatsApp to message them.
Everyone in China uses WeChat to message each other. If you are planning to hire drivers or do local tours, then you might want to download the app so you can communicate better with the locals. You can also use it to pay for things and book tickets through its mini programs.
Why WeChat is a must-have:
Stay connected with locals and travel companions
Pay bills, book tickets, and order food delivery
Use mini-programs for shopping, taxis, and more
4. Uber doesn’t work in China; use Didi instead
Didi works exactly the same as Uber, and you can order a car from wherever you are in China. The prices are very reasonable, and the interface is in English, so you can put the addresses in English instead of needing the Chinese address. There is a translate messaging function so you can communicate with your driver. You can link your foreign card so it is easy to pay.
Why Didi is traveller-friendly:
Works just like Uber
Easy to use - you can download the app or use it via Alipay or WeChat
Supports English interface and auto-translation with drivers
Multiple ride options (budget, premium, carpool)
Not as cheap as public transport, but very reasonable, and you won’t get lost
5. TripAdvisor is outdated in China; use Dianping to find the best local spots
TripAdvisor isn’t widely used in China and is outdated. No one in China uses it, so it will only be recommendations from other travellers.
The local alternative is Dianping (大众点评), China’s number one restaurant and lifestyle app. It’s great for finding the best spots, whether that is restaurants, shops or activities. There is a map function so you can see what is nearby. Real reviews, travellers’ pictures and more. You can also translate the app into English.
Why Dianping is useful:
Thousands of local reviews and ratings
Photos of dishes to help you decide
Great for finding hidden gems and popular local spots that you wouldn’t know existed
English translation
6. Booking.com is not the one in China; Trip.com reigns supreme
While Booking.com is used worldwide, it is not the best platform for hotels in China. It doesn’t have as many choices, as local hotels don’t use it. The listings can be outdated, and I just wouldn’t recommend using it.
Trip.com is the go-to place for local and international travellers. It’s not only the best place for hotels, but you can also book your flights, trains and attractions all in one place. It also saves them in order so that you have your full itinerary in the app.
Why Trip is better in China:
Large selection of hotels
English-language customer support available 24/7
Often cheaper prices and better cancellation policies than Booking.com
Integrates with Alipay and WeChat for easy payments - or you can use your foreign card
I love Trip.com so much that I use it in the UK as well. Their train tickets are far cheaper than other platforms. You also get points every time you use them, which you can use to get money off other bookings at a later date.
Without the right apps, you might feel like a lost tourist. But with these Chinese apps, you’ll go from stressed and disconnected to a confident traveller — able to pay, ride, chat, and explore with ease.
Top Tips:
Download all apps before you travel (some app stores may not work in China).
Carry a power bank — you’ll use your phone for everything.
Set up Alipay and WeChat in advance for a smooth first day. You may need to register your details and receive an SMS, which will be easier in your home country.
Check how they all work before you go so that you can navigate them with ease when you get there.
With these essential China app swaps, your trip will be smoother, easier, and far more enjoyable.
